Get Excited

I have been sitting with a reframe for quite some time. Some of you may have heard me talk about it. My life circumstances have been such that I am approaching our year-end planning just a bit differently this year.
You see, every January I start all excited for my year. I do the work. I cast the vision, I plan the habits, I set the goals. But then something happens. A plot twist happens at some point in the next few months, and I have to completely regroup.
Do I throw it all away?
Do I quit?
NO!
I rewrite. I tweak. I edit. I realign and adjust. I have been living and breathing Life Drafting for the past several years. My reframe isn't new. I've had this concept and framework for awhile now, but I still held firm to my yearly planning framework.
This year's retreat will reveal what I've been working on.
Yes, we will vision.
Yes, we will set goals.
Yes, we will create systems and habits.
But . . . we will do it from a different place. A different viewpoint . . . one that allows for the inevitable plot twists that will hit some point in the next year. It helps us to remove the blinders that hold so tightly to controlling the outcome and allow us to look around for what is really happening. We want to notice when we need to edit.
I know, it's a fine line.
When your plans shift, it's natural to feel like you quit. Like you didn't follow through. Like the goal you set in January that you didn't hit it are a failure. That voice is loud, and it's not entirely wrong to hear it. We are wired to want structure. We want the productivity. We want the checklist, the habit tracker, the satisfaction of crossing something off exactly as planned. And if you need that, we will create it.
But here's what I've learned: staying committed to a direction isn't the same as staying locked onto a destination. A destination is fixed. A direction can flex with you. It can absorb the plot twist without losing its shape. You're not failing when you make an edit.
But planning in pencil isn't about being casual about your future. It's not giving up when we hit a plot twist. It's about being committed to the process without demanding certainty about the outcome. This is what we will work on at the December retreat. Plan to be there!
In your reflection work this week - just start thinking about the year you've been having. There is still a lot left! How can you rewrite without tossing out all of your January draft?
